Join internationally acclaimed artist INSA for a hands-on creative workshop exploring the techniques behind his pioneering GIF-ITI practice.

INSA is known globally for his innovative and technically complex artistic approach, with a practice spanning large-scale public artworks, digital media, design and commercial projects. In 2010, he pioneered GIF-ITI, a meticulous process of repeatedly repainting and photographing murals to create animated GIFs, later integrating augmented reality to bring these works back into the physical environment. His work explores time, space, consumption and transience, with GIF-ITI remaining a defining element of his practice.

GIF-ITI combines physical artwork, photography and digital animation to create looping artworks that move frame by frame. In this practical session, INSA will take participants through his creative process and introduce the techniques used to develop this distinctive form of animated art.

Participants will have the opportunity to experiment with creating their own GIF-ITI artwork while learning how ideas, composition, movement, photography and digital processes can work together.

What you'll learn

  • The principles and creative thinking behind GIF-ITI
  • How to plan a static artwork for animation
  • Techniques for photographing artwork frame by frame
  • How repetition and movement can transform an artwork
  • Ways to experiment with digital animation and looping imagery
